Euro Teens - What Do They Think of Us?
Anyone who lives in the U.S knows that feelings about America have been running high in Europe this summer – so high, in fact, that a recent poll named the US as the most feared and hated nation in the world. But do they really hate us, or hate the policies of the current administration? The Zeen decided to find out by taking our own, very unscientific poll, among a small sampling of teens from Germany, France and England. Pascal Janke and Charley Murphey e-mailed our interviewees four questions:

1.) What do you think of President Bush?

2.) What do you think of his policies?

3.) Do you think that the American people agree with what he is doing?
4.) What do you think of America in general?

The responses we received were wonderful. Here is a cross-section of their replies:

Germany:
1.) “I think that Bush is a war monger who is only interested in economical advantages like the oil in Iraq. Besides that I think he has an obsolete picture of our world, because he thinks that he can solve important problems with a war. And he doesn’t realize his big responsibility, which is as a president of a world power like America…

The first thing I think when I hear the name America, is freedom and fast food. I think for all that is America a great country. Only they must vote for another president.”

Joscha Woernhoer.

2.) “I think that we can’t really judge George W. Bush because I think that he is just a marionette and doesn’t decide very much. But other people who probably only work in the background tell him what to do. He is surely a big patriot and maybe a rightist as well, but I really think that he is just a person who acts like other people want him to.”

Moritz Wangart.

France:
1.) I am very happy with these few questions. I did not approve of President Bush's ideas for war against Iraq. I am opposed to any wars for which there is no real justification. I don't think all of the American people supported it, either. I love the United States and am now learning about it at college (in Geography class). I sympathize over 9/11. The United States is a great power (chief of the three: USA, Europe, Japan). But I can't abide President Bush's ideas.”

Lety Faure.

2.) I am very concerned about Bush's behavior towards Iraq… My feelings towards him are closer to hate than to admiration. In my view, he is cashing in on the United States' great power - what it possesses and what Iraq has done to take what belongs to it: the oil.

I believe the American public can be put in two categories: first and foremost, the people for whom this war was a form of revenge – the majority must be people affected by the ghastly disaster of September 11th. And secondly, the others who don't think about or are against it. Why kill people when they're in no way involved in this affair (I'm thinking of the children, above all), like the poor Americans who were trapped in the 9/11 attack? Agreed, the perpetrators had no pity for the Americans; but waging this war was merely thinking like them. “

Anais Vasseur.

1. President Bush is a man sure of himself, but he does not realize the extent to which his attack on Iraq could affect numerous countries whose security is insufficient for them to avoid being harmed.

Europe has both doubters and supporters of Bush. On the one hand, his plans could cause grave tensions among countries which have commercial relations with adversaries of the United States. However, Bush himself asserts that his mission is to liberate people subjected to a tyrant as leader. But might it not also be that a further object of this mission is to acquire more riches? For at the very moment he has saved the country, he has subjected it to the domination of the American people. (Charley: although her reply doesn't specifically say so, what she means - of course - is Iraq's oil wealth.)

2. Bush thinks only of money to improve his people's standard of living. He takes great care to maintain their place as the world's greatest power. Only, the future of the planet is under threat and is much more important than merely fighting for money. This concerns the whole world, but in particular those who have large enough means to persuade everyone to respect nature...

The USA is a great power. It has all the highly efficient technical means to protect itself against hostile missiles. In addition, the Americans have a great wealth of the raw materials required to meet the needs of society, such as gas, cereals, etc., and all the latest technology. Now, Europe trades in numerous products which it cannot obtain from its own territory. That's why it maintains close relations with other countries which help to meet its needs. This results in very friendly contacts for the import and export of goods and services.

As regards our two continents, Europe upholds the Americas for their achievements and their proofs of heroism.

For our English responses, we turned to our friends at Birkdale High School. Just about everyone in the eighth grade replied with such sharp, observant and funny e-mails that it was very hard to choose which ones to use. In the end, we simply didn’t have the space for all them, but we’d like to thank you guys for contributing and our thanks to Graham Fletcher for setting it up:

1.) “America is a land of wealth and technology, but it can be greedy and ignorant. One of the things that I dislike is the way you get petrol (gas) so cheaply. Over here is 80 pence a liter, but because it’s so cheap where you are it entitles you to drive massive cars that pollute the environment! To make matters worse, President Bush decides to invade Iraq to get more oil for even cheaper petrol.”

2.) “I think that the American people are great! (apart from Hannibal Lector who should have the electric chair) I think the way the country is run is great and I think the cheap prices compared to England’s are fantastic.”

P.M.

3.) “In general I think America is both a very popular and unpopular country. Lots of people disagree with most of America’s actions in general, but on the other hand I agree with the U.S and see it as a great place and (why not?) a place of true freedom. America is a great country with all its riches, beautiful places and cool schools – as seen on TV – although it can still be quite selfish. “

Adam.

4.) “I think Bush is an okay fellow, apart from the fact he looks like a chimp. I think he just wants to finish off terrorism once and for all, but is just going the wrong way about it. He shouldn’t just bomb everywhere!”

Billy Boardman.

5.) I myself HATE George Bush!! He seems to be a man hungry for power and he believes that he has the right to do anything, which is one of the reasons for my dislike towards him. He thinks that everything he’s doing is good for his country, I totally disagree. Look how many casualties there have been already! Bush is making the world a dangerous place for all humans and countries on Earth. Why should Iraqi civilians suffer? Just ask yourself these questions.”

Kareem Mohamed.

6.) “I think that the American public are like the British public on the war. This is because the government strongly believes in its cause like in England. The government also has a fair few supporters from the general population, while it also has its protesters. This is how democracy works.”

Peter Tweedy.

And finally…

We wanted to give the last word to a lad from London, Chaden Wilson Groves, who had this to say about George Bush:

"You've got to admit he's a few thousand sandwiches short of a picnic… but I think it's better to be suspicious of something or someone like Saddam, than to try and pretend it's not happening.”
