NOT SO QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT Compilation

Reviewed by Eryk Benetti

Not So Quiet on the Western Front is an all punk rock compilation from the early 80’s. Back in the 80’s this comp. was released on Alternative Tentacles records. Alternative Tentacles then re-released it a couple of years ago. The bands include the Dead Kennedys, M.D.C., Naked Lady Wrestlers, Los Olividados, Free Beer, and Killjoy. There are 47 songs and it comes with a 50 page booklet, with pages from all the bands.
A great buy for punk fans.

NEIL YOUNG & PEARL JAM LIVE – THE MIRRORBALL SHOW

Reviewed by Andrew Saucier

My dad is a huge Neil Young fan and thus, I grew up in his presence. Now, putting Pearl Jam and Neil Young together in two hard-to-find CDs is like bliss. Although it sounds like someone put a tape recorder in their pocket at the show, you cannot help but loving the double dose of “Rockin’ in the Free World”.

WASTELAND OF THE FREE

Reviewed by Sallyann Murphey

Between the war in Iraq, the economy, the environment and legislation like the Patriot Act, more people are taking to the streets than at any time since the Seventies. So it should come as no surprise that the protest song is also staging a comeback – angry songs that send a shiver down the spine like Iris DeMent’s brutal Wasteland of the Free. You only have to check out one verse to know that this lady is not pulling her punches:

We got politicians runnin’ races on corporate cash Now don’t tell me they don’t turn around and kiss them people’s ass
Now you may call me old-fashioned
But that don’t fit my picture of a true democracy
And it feels like I’m living in The Wasteland of the Free”

DeMent wrote the song back in 1996, but its words sound even more relevant today. You can find them on her album, The Way I Should .
